Generation I
Best Team for Pokémon Blue
Pokémon Blue shares Kanto's geography with Red but swaps a few version exclusives. This team covers all eight gyms and the Elite Four without relying on trade evolutions.
Recommended Team
Blastoise
Water — Starter
Squirtle has the easiest early game of the three starters and Blastoise's Surf + Ice Beam carries it through most of the Kanto Gym Leaders.
Starmie
Water / Psychic — All-Rounder
Staryu is found on the Cerulean City shore; evolved with a Water Stone, Starmie's Psychic coverage complements Blastoise's Water typing perfectly.
Jolteon
Electric — Speed Sweeper
Eevee is gifted in Celadon City Mansion; use a Thunder Stone immediately and Jolteon's raw Speed stat makes it one of the best mid-game additions.
Nidoking
Poison / Ground — Coverage Attacker
Route 22 Nidoran♂ → Moon Stone; learns Earthquake for Rock and Steel, plus Surf and Thunderbolt for near-complete type coverage.
Lapras
Water / Ice — Bulky Support
Gift from Silph Co.; provides Surf HM and Ice Beam to handle Dragon-type Lance's team in the Elite Four.
Kadabra
Psychic — Special Sweeper
Catch an Abra with a Friend Ball near Cerulean City; Kadabra's Special stat and Speed are the highest of any non-legendary Psychic type obtainable without trading.
Tips & Notes
- →
Blue has Meowth and Magmar as exclusives, but neither is essential — focus on the core six above.
- →
Kadabra can't evolve to Alakazam without trading, but its stats are strong enough to carry the story.
- →
Starmie and Blastoise overlap on Water type — feel free to swap one for an Arcanine (found in Blue on Route 7/8) if you want Fire coverage.
