Typhlosion
Fire — Starter
Cyndaquil evolves quickly and Typhlosion's Special Attack is the highest Fire type available; it handles Grass, Bug, Ice, and Steel types throughout both regions.
Ampharos
Electric — Special Attacker
Route 32's Mareep evolves into a reliable Electric powerhouse that covers the Water Gym leaders in Johto and the Water routes of Kanto.
Gyarados
Water / Flying — Physical Tank
A Magikarp fished on Route 32 becomes a Gyarados at level 20 and remains a top-tier physical attacker through the entire sixteen-badge run.
Heracross
Bug / Fighting — Coverage Attacker
Headbutt trees in Azalea Town or Route 33; Heracross is the premier physical sweeper of Gen II and covers the Dark and Normal types you'll face in Karen and Blue.
Espeon
Psychic — Fast Special Attacker
Crystal has the same Eevee gift from Bill in Goldenrod City; level during daytime with high friendship for Espeon, the fastest Psychic type in Johto.
Dragonair
Dragon — Late-Game Sweeper
Receive a Dratini from the elder in Dragon's Den after earning the Rising Badge (8th badge); Dragonair hits hard with Dragon Rage and Dragon Tail before Dragonite is reachable.
