Generation III
Best Team for Pokémon Emerald
Pokémon Emerald is the definitive Hoenn experience with the full Battle Frontier, improved trainer AI, and both Groudon and Kyogre in the story. Any of the three starters work; this team is built around Blaziken.
Recommended Team
Blaziken
Fire / Fighting — Starter
Blaziken's dual Fire/Fighting STAB handles the most Gym Leaders in Hoenn; it sweeps Winona, Tate and Liza, and most of the Elite Four with minimal coverage moves.
Gyarados
Water / Flying — Physical Powerhouse
Old Rod Magikarp in Dewford Town becomes Gyarados at level 20; it covers Blaziken's Water weakness and provides Intimidate to tank physical hits.
Gardevoir
Psychic — Special Sweeper
Ralts on Route 102 is available from the very first route; Gardevoir's Calm Mind + Psychic combo is one of the cleanest late-game set-ups in Hoenn.
Manectric
Electric — Speed Attacker
Electrike on Route 110 offers early Electric coverage; Manectric outspeeds most mid-game threats and can switch in on Water moves targeting Blaziken.
Flygon
Dragon / Ground — Pivot
Trapinch is found in the Route 111 desert after the fifth gym; Flygon is extremely versatile with Earthquake, Dragon Claw, and Fly for an effective pivot role.
Tentacruel
Water / Poison — HM Carrier
Tentacool appears everywhere on water routes and evolves at level 30; it carries Surf, Dive, and Waterfall to keep the rest of the team's move sets clean.
Tips & Notes
- →
Emerald's Battle Frontier is the true end-game; your team will need IV and nature optimisation for the Battle Pyramid and Battle Pike.
- →
Flygon requires training a Trapinch through Vibrava before becoming useful — consider catching it with a level boost from the desert.
- →
Steven gives you a Beldum (which evolves into Metagross) postgame — worth adding for the Battle Frontier grind.
