Generation II
Best Team for Pokémon Gold
Pokémon Gold opens into Johto with 100 new Pokémon and a massive postgame in Kanto. This team covers all sixteen badges without requiring any trades.
Recommended Team
Typhlosion
Fire — Starter
Cyndaquil's fast level-up curve and Typhlosion's high Special Attack make it the strongest Johto starter for a first playthrough.
Ampharos
Electric — Special Attacker
Catch Mareep on Route 32 before the second gym; Ampharos arrives early and covers Water and Flying types that plague the Johto stretch.
Gyarados
Water / Flying — Physical Powerhouse
Fish a Magikarp with the Old Rod from Route 32 or Mt. Moon; a Gyarados at level 20 is one of the strongest mid-game Pokémon in Gen II.
Heracross
Bug / Fighting — Coverage
Headbutt trees on Route 33 or 34 to find Heracross; it's the best physical attacker in Johto and handles Dark and Normal types that otherwise wall the team.
Espeon
Psychic — Fast Special Attacker
Receive Eevee from Bill in Goldenrod City after visiting Ecruteak; level it with high friendship during the daytime to evolve into Espeon.
Quagsire
Water / Ground — Bulky Coverage
Catch Wooper in Union Cave (night) or Route 32; Quagsire covers Ground and Water in a single slot and has natural immunity to Electric attacks.
Tips & Notes
- →
Espeon requires friendship + daytime leveling — keep Eevee in your party and avoid letting it faint to speed up the bond.
- →
Heracross is only available via Headbutt; talk to the man in Azalea Town to learn Headbutt, then hit trees on Route 33.
- →
Gold has exclusive Pokémon like Growlithe and Mankey that aren't in Silver — Arcanine is a strong Fire alternative if you don't want Typhlosion.
