Generation III
Best Team for Pokémon LeafGreen
Pokémon LeafGreen is the companion to FireRed, with Vulpix and Sandshrew as version exclusives instead of Growlithe and Ekans. Venusaur is the recommended starter for an easier early game.
Recommended Team
Venusaur
Grass / Poison — Starter
Venusaur has the easiest path through the first four gyms; Razor Leaf handles Misty, Surge, Erika, and Koga without needing extra coverage moves.
Starmie
Water / Psychic — All-Rounder
Staryu in Cerulean City evolved with a Water Stone; covers Water, Psychic, and Ice in one efficient slot alongside Venusaur's Grass coverage.
Raichu
Electric — Speed Attacker
Pikachu is available on Route 2 after the first gym; use a Thunder Stone to evolve into Raichu for early Electric coverage.
Nidoking
Poison / Ground — Earthquake User
Route 22 Nidoran♂ + Moon Stone; Earthquake + Surf gives excellent neutral coverage alongside the team's Grass and Electric attacks.
Lapras
Water / Ice — Bulk
Gift from Silph Co.; Lapras's Blizzard destroys Dragon-type Lance and provides a second Water-type HM user.
Ninetales
Fire — LeafGreen Exclusive
Vulpix is a LeafGreen-exclusive found on Routes 7 and 8; evolve with a Fire Stone for Ninetales, providing Fire coverage unavailable in FireRed without trading.
Tips & Notes
- →
Vulpix is LeafGreen-exclusive — this is your chance to use Ninetales without needing a trade from FireRed.
- →
Sandshrew (Routes 4 and 23) is another LeafGreen exclusive and can serve as a Ground-type Ground attacker instead of Nidoking if preferred.
- →
Starmie and Lapras both use Water moves — one can be swapped for an Arcanine from FireRed trading if you want Fire coverage.
