Generation IV
Best Team for Pokémon Pearl
Pokémon Pearl features Palkia and several Pearl-exclusive Pokémon including Glameow, Misdreavus, and Bonsly. This team builds around the strong Pokémon available through a normal Pearl playthrough.
Recommended Team
Empoleon
Water / Steel — Starter
Piplup's Water/Steel typing gives Empoleon one of the best defensive type combinations in Gen IV and its Special Attack carries through both the Gym challenge and Elite Four.
Gyarados
Water / Flying — Physical Sweeper
Old Rod Magikarp south of Jubilife City reaches Gyarados at level 20; Dragon Dance into Waterfall sweeps most of the Sinnoh Gym Leaders.
Staraptor
Normal / Flying — Physical Attacker
Starly on Route 201 is available from the first steps; Staraptor's Close Combat provides Fighting coverage that the rest of the team lacks.
Lucario
Fighting / Steel — Coverage Sweeper
Riley's Riolu egg from Iron Island (post-5th badge) hatches into a Riolu that evolves with friendship; Aura Sphere handles the Rock, Dark, and Steel types in the Elite Four.
Togekiss
Normal / Flying — Support Attacker
Cynthia gives you a Togepi Egg in Eterna City; evolve to Togetic (friendship), then use a Shiny Stone to get Togekiss, a reliable Air Slash pivot against Fighting types.
Garchomp
Dragon / Ground — Late-Game Ace
Gible in Wayward Cave under Cycling Road; Garchomp's Earthquake and Dragon Claw sweep Cynthia's powerful team in the Champion battle.
Tips & Notes
- →
Pearl has Glameow/Purugly and Misdreavus/Mismagius as exclusives not in Diamond — Mismagius (via Dusk Stone) is a strong Ghost-type addition.
- →
Togekiss requires a Shiny Stone which isn't available until late game; consider swapping it for Heracross (Honey Trees) if you need Fighting coverage sooner.
- →
Piplup has the toughest first gym (Rock type) but becomes the easiest starter from gym 3 onward thanks to Water's wide coverage.
