Generation IV
Best Team for Pokémon Platinum
Pokémon Platinum is the enhanced Sinnoh experience with updated trainer teams, the Distortion World, and the post-game Battle Frontier. The AI is harder than Diamond and Pearl, so good type coverage is essential.
Recommended Team
Infernape
Fire / Fighting — Starter
Chimchar is the most popular Platinum starter; Infernape's mixed attacking stats and Fire/Fighting coverage handle most of the Sinnoh Gym Leaders.
Gyarados
Water / Flying — Dragon Dance Sweeper
Old Rod Magikarp near Jubilife City; Platinum's improved game pacing lets Gyarados come online faster and it remains a top physical attacker all game.
Staraptor
Normal / Flying — Brave Bird User
Starly from Route 201; Platinum boosts Staraptor's presence and Brave Bird + Close Combat give it two coverage moves that hit everything in Sinnoh.
Lucario
Fighting / Steel — All-Rounder
Riolu egg from Riley on Iron Island; Lucario learns Close Combat, Aura Sphere, and Flash Cannon — strong against most of the Elite Four's teams.
Togekiss
Normal / Flying — Bulky Support
Togepi egg from Cynthia in Eterna City; evolve via friendship then Shiny Stone; Togekiss's Air Slash flinch rate and Aura coverage make it a reliable mid-battle pivot.
Garchomp
Dragon / Ground — Champion Sweeper
Gible in Wayward Cave; Cynthia herself uses Garchomp — having your own ready is the best preparation for the Champion battle and the post-game Battle Frontier.
Tips & Notes
- →
Platinum's Elite Four teams have been strengthened compared to Diamond and Pearl — bring more healing items than you think you'll need.
- →
The Battle Frontier is unlocked post-game; build a second team with proper EV training and natures for the Battle Factory and Battle Arcade.
- →
Rotom (Electric/Ghost) is obtainable pre-Elite Four in Platinum by visiting the Old Chateau after getting HM Defog from Fantina.
