Generation I
Best Team for Pokémon Red
Pokémon Red's Kanto is a straightforward region, but type coverage matters against Sabrina's Psychic gym and the Elite Four. This team provides Fire, Water, Electric, Ground, Ice, and Ghost coverage without requiring any trades.
Recommended Team
Charizard
Fire / Flying — Starter
Charmander's early game is rough, but Charizard pays off with power against most late-game threats including Lorelei's Ice types.
Starmie
Water / Psychic — All-Rounder
Catch Staryu in Cerulean City and evolve with a Water Stone; Starmie's Water and Psychic coverage plus high Speed sweeps the Elite Four.
Jolteon
Electric — Speed Sweeper
Buy a Thunder Stone in Celadon's Department Store; Jolteon is the fastest Electric type available and shreds Water and Flying opposition.
Nidoking
Poison / Ground — HM Mule + Attacker
Catch Nidoran♂ on Route 22 and use a Moon Stone; Nidoking learns Earthquake, Surf, Thunderbolt, and Cut — covering attacks and HMs in one slot.
Lapras
Water / Ice — Bulky Support
Received as a gift from a Silph Co. employee; Lapras provides Surf outside battle and Ice coverage to threaten Dragon types in the final stretch.
Haunter
Ghost / Poison — Special Attacker
Catch a Gastly in Pokémon Tower; Haunter is the only Ghost type obtainable without trading and has immunity to Normal and Fighting attacks.
Tips & Notes
- →
Catch a Mankey on Route 22 early — it helps enormously against Brock's Rock types before Charizard is online.
- →
Nidoking can serve as your HM slave: teach it Cut, Surf, and Strength to free up slots on the rest of the team.
- →
Haunter can't evolve into Gengar without trading, but it functions identically in battle for the in-game story.
