Generation III
Best Team for Pokémon Ruby
Pokémon Ruby explores the tropical Hoenn region with 135 new Pokémon and introduces double battles and Abilities. Blaziken is a fan favourite starter, and Hoenn has excellent early-game Pokémon variety.
Recommended Team
Blaziken
Fire / Fighting — Starter
Torchic's Fire/Fighting typing and massive Attack give Blaziken the best offensive presence of the Hoenn starters for in-game purposes.
Gyarados
Water / Flying — Physical Sweeper
Fish a Magikarp with the Old Rod in Dewford Town and grind it to level 20; Gyarados handles the Water and Rock coverage Blaziken doesn't.
Gardevoir
Psychic — Special Attacker
Catch a Ralts on Route 102 right at the start of the game; Gardevoir arrives well before the fourth gym and provides Psychic coverage and Calm Mind sweeping.
Manectric
Electric — Speed Attacker
Electrike is found on Route 110 after the third gym; Manectric's Speed tier and Thunderbolt let it outpace most opponent Pokémon.
Aggron
Steel / Rock — Physical Tank
Aron is available in Granite Cave after the first gym; Steel typing gives Aggron a huge resistance list and Rock Slide hits Flying and Bug types hard.
Tentacruel
Water / Poison — HM User + Coverage
Tentacool appears on almost every water route and evolves at level 30; it learns Surf, Waterfall, and Dive while providing Poison coverage against Grass types.
Tips & Notes
- →
Blaziken's Speed isn't great — consider pairing High Jump Kick with a Choice Band or using it as a lead sweeper rather than a back-line finisher.
- →
Aggron is a Steel type, so it has no weaknesses to Steven's Steel-type Pokémon — it's excellent for the Champion battle.
- →
You can fish Magikarp in Dewford Town before the second gym, giving you Gyarados very early in the game.
