Generation III
Best Team for Pokémon Sapphire
Pokémon Sapphire features more Water-type Pokémon than any other game in the series and has Team Aqua as its primary villain. Mudkip is one of the strongest in-game starters in the series.
Recommended Team
Swampert
Water / Ground — Starter
Mudkip's only weakness is Grass — Water/Ground covers Fire, Rock, Electric, Poison, and Steel; Swampert is arguably the best in-game starter in Gen III.
Gardevoir
Psychic — Special Attacker
Route 102 Ralts evolves into Gardevoir before the fourth gym; Calm Mind sets let it sweep Gym Leaders and the Elite Four's Psychic types.
Manectric
Electric — Speed Attacker
Electrike on Route 110 covers Flying and Water types outside of what Swampert handles; Manectric's Speed makes it a reliable revenge killer.
Aggron
Steel / Rock — Defensive Attacker
Aron in Granite Cave is catchable early; Aggron's huge physical bulk and Steel-type resistances make it a reliable pivot against most Gym Leaders.
Altaria
Dragon / Flying — Coverage Sweeper
Swablu appears on Route 114 after the fourth gym; Altaria is a Sapphire fan favourite with Dragon Dance and a naturally high Special Defense stat.
Breloom
Grass / Fighting — Physical Attacker
Shroomish is found on Route 117 after the fourth gym; Breloom's Fighting and Grass dual coverage handles the Water, Rock, and Dark types that appear late in Hoenn.
Tips & Notes
- →
Swampert doesn't need a secondary Water type on the team — its Ground coverage and natural bulk let you invest more team slots in offence.
- →
Altaria requires patience: Swablu appears at level 13–15 on Route 114 and Altaria doesn't evolve until level 35.
- →
Sapphire has Lotad/Lombre/Ludicolo as a Water/Grass exclusive not in Ruby — a solid alternative to Breloom for coverage.
