Generation II
Best Team for Pokémon Silver
Pokémon Silver has several Silver-exclusive Pokémon not in Gold, most notably Skarmory and Vulpix. This team leans into Silver's strengths with balanced type coverage across all sixteen badges.
Recommended Team
Feraligatr
Water — Starter
Totodile gives the strongest early-game starter in Silver; Feraligatr's physical Attack and access to Surf make it a workhorse through both Johto and Kanto.
Ampharos
Electric — Special Attacker
Mareep on Route 32 evolves into one of the most reliable Electric types in the game, covering the many Water routes of Johto.
Gyarados
Water / Flying — Physical Sweeper
Fish a Magikarp early on Route 32; Gyarados arrives at level 20 ready to sweep and carries the team through mid-game.
Heracross
Bug / Fighting — Physical Attacker
Headbutt trees on Route 33 for Heracross; the strongest physical attacker in Johto and an essential team member for the Dark-type-heavy Kanto stretch.
Umbreon
Dark — Defensive Pivot
Receive Eevee from Bill; level with high friendship during nighttime to evolve into Umbreon, a bulky wall that counters Psychic and Ghost types.
Skarmory
Steel / Flying — Silver Exclusive
Skarmory is Silver-exclusive, found on Routes 45 and 46; its Steel/Flying combination offers unique resistances and it learns Wing Attack and Steel Wing for solid offensive coverage.
Tips & Notes
- →
Silver has Vulpix (not Growlithe like Gold) — you can add a Ninetales if you want a Fire type instead of relying on a bought TM.
- →
Umbreon requires nighttime friendship leveling — opposite of Espeon in Gold, so pick the game you'll play in the evening for Umbreon.
- →
Skarmory is found on Routes 45 and 46 (south of Blackthorn City) around level 13–15, so get it before heading to the Pokémon League.
