Generation IV
Best Team for Pokémon SoulSilver
Pokémon SoulSilver is the Silver remake featuring Lugia as mascot, Pokémon walking alongside you, and access to all 493 Pokémon. The dual Johto + Kanto adventure makes it one of the most content-rich entries in the series.
Recommended Team
Feraligatr
Water — Starter
Totodile's physical bias pays off with Feraligatr's massive Attack stat; it carries Surf, Waterfall, and Ice Fang to cover most of what you'll face in both regions.
Gyarados
Water / Flying — Dragon Dance Sweeper
Old Rod Magikarp on Route 32 evolves at level 20; Gyarados's Dragon Dance plus Waterfall sweeps most of the mid-game Gym Leaders.
Ampharos
Electric — Special Attacker
Mareep on Route 32 evolves into the team's primary Electric coverage, handling the Flying and Water types in both Johto and Kanto.
Heracross
Bug / Fighting — Physical Sweeper
Headbutt trees near Azalea Town for Heracross; the best physical attacker in Johto and essential for handling Karen's Dark types and Bruno's Fighting coverage.
Umbreon
Dark — Defensive Wall
Receive Eevee from Bill; level during nighttime with high friendship for Umbreon, a bulky Dark type that walls Psychic and Ghost types in both regions.
Dragonite
Dragon / Flying — Late-Game Ace
Dratini from the Dragon's Den after the 8th badge becomes Dragonite in the Kanto stretch; its Hurricane and Dragon Claw are devastating against Red's team postgame.
Tips & Notes
- →
SoulSilver has Vulpix and Skarmory as exclusive Pokémon not in HeartGold — Skarmory in particular is excellent and worth catching on Routes 45/46.
- →
Lugia is part of the main story and catchable at level 45 in SoulSilver — consider adding it to the team for the Kanto stretch.
- →
Umbreon's friendship evolution requires nighttime leveling, opposite from Espeon in HeartGold.
