Generation VII
Best Team for Pokémon Ultra Moon
Pokémon Ultra Moon is the enhanced Moon companion with an inverted day/night cycle, Dusk Mane Necrozma as the story antagonist, and additional Ultra Wormhole legendary encounters. Popplio is the recommended starter.
Recommended Team
Primarina
Water / Fairy — Starter
Popplio's Fairy typing provides crucial coverage against Dragon and Dark types in the expanded Ultra Moon roster; Primarina is the most defensively versatile Alola starter.
Wishiwashi
Water — Schooling Tank
Found near Brooklet Hill early on; School Form Wishiwashi outperforms most legendaries in raw stats and handles the many Rock and Fire types throughout Alola.
Vikavolt
Bug / Electric — Special Attacker
Grubbin on Route 1 builds into Vikavolt; its exceptional Special Attack covers Flying, Water, Grass, and Psychic types that Primarina and Wishiwashi miss.
Mudsdale
Ground — Physical Wall
Mudbray at Paniola Ranch; Earthquake from Mudsdale handles Electric types that threaten the team's three Water Pokémon.
Lycanroc
Rock — Midnight Form Sweeper
Rockruff evolves into Midnight Lycanroc (between 8pm–11:59pm) in Ultra Moon; Counter reflects physical attacks for double damage, making it a surprise weapon in trainer battles.
Kommo-o
Dragon / Fighting — Coverage Sweeper
Jangmo-o in Vast Poni Canyon; Kommo-o's Clangorous Soulblaze Z-Move is the only Dragon-type Z-Move that also boosts all stats, making it ideal for the final boss encounters.
Tips & Notes
- →
Ultra Moon's day/night is inverted from real life — Midnight Lycanroc evolves between 8pm–12am game time, which is 8am–12pm in the real world.
- →
Ultra Necrozma at the finale is level 60 with devastating moves; ensure your team is level 55+ and bring lots of Full Restores.
- →
The Ultra Wormhole minigame lets you find legendary Pokémon from previous games; great for filling your team's coverage gaps after the main story.
